Bohemia is the other Czech wine region, and most people, Czechs included, forget it exists. Moravia holds about 96 percent of the country’s vines; Bohemia has the remaining 675 hectares, under four percent, scattered across 75 villages along the Labe (Elbe), the Vltava and the Ohře, with an outlier at Kutná Hora to the east. Officially the region is Čechy, split into Mělnická, 349 hectares around Mělník, and Litoměřická, 326 around Litoměřice and Velké Žernoseky.

Slovácko wine region: painted cellars and Blatnický roháč

The place: Uherské Hradiště, Strážnice and the villages of the búdy#

Slovácko is the eastern quarter of South Moravia’s wine country in Czechia, and the one my guests know least. It runs from the Morava river plain, south-east of Brno, to the first slopes of the White Carpathians on the Slovak border. The Slovácká sub-region is the third largest of the country’s six, about 4,065 hectares in 2025 across 118 wine villages and more than 5,600 registered growers. Slovácko is smallholder country: a few rows behind the house, a press house at the village edge, wine made for the family and the neighbours first.

Velké Pavlovice: Frankovka country and the Blue Hills

The place#

Forty minutes south of my door in Brno the land flattens into long, low waves of loess. This is the Velké Pavlovice sub-region of South Moravia, the red-wine quarter of Czechia: 4,580 hectares of vines in 2025, 70 wine villages and just over 5,100 registered growers. The vines belong to thousands of families, and the villages have a cellar lane where other places have a high street.

Znojmo: Šobes, the blue cellars and Grüner Veltliner

The place#

Znojmo is the westernmost of South Moravia’s four wine sub-regions in Czechia and the one that looks most toward Austria. The town stands on a cliff above the Dyje river, 70 kilometres south-west of my door in Brno; the Znojemská podoblast around it holds 3,069 hectares of vines in 90 wine villages and about 810 registered growers. Across the Pulkau valley the slopes continue as Austria’s Weinviertel. Of the sub-regions in my Czechia guide, this is the cool corner: sharper whites, fewer reds.

Mikulov wine region: Welschriesling under the Pálava hills

The place: Mikulov, Pavlov, Popice and the villages under Pálava#

Mikulov is the wine region I can reach from my door in Brno before the coffee has cooled: 55 kilometres south, 50 minutes, the last town in Czechia before the Austrian border. The Mikulovská podoblast is one of Moravia’s four sub-regions, with 4,876 hectares of vines across 30 wine villages (2025). It is also the warmest of the four.
